Sex & Nudity in Cinema is as old as the art of Cinema itself! It means any presentation in films that includes at least one
person who is nude or wearing clothing that is considered less by contemporary norms.
The presentation of nudity in films or otherwise has
been controversial. Many renowned filmmakers justified the use of nudity as being part of the story and very integral to the script.
Many films had nudity itself as the object or subject of a film, thereby the concept of "artistically justifiable nudity" was born! Just like filmmakers, many actors and actresses have appeared nude, or exposed
parts of their bodies or dressed in ways considered provocative at some point in their careers. Some of them used it as a tool to gain popularity, the most classic example is Sharon Stone's 'leg crossing scene' in Basic
Instinct that catapulted her in the ivy league of Hollywood Superstars!
Irrespective of the case, nudity has found its criticism; many terming it "superfluous" or "gratuitous" to the plot; film directors have often been accused of including nudity in their film to appeal to a section of audiences. In spite of this all, nudity is still one of the ingredients of many films worldwide.
Nudity in India
Nudity in film is restricted by the Indian Censor Board, now Central Board of Film Certification. Nudity, in full or in part is banned; however
some Indian films with their premieres outside India do contain nudity.
The Bengali film Gandu (2010), starring Anubrata Basu, features
full-frontal nudity and a fully erect penis. Chatrak
(2011), starring Paoli Dam and Anubrata Basu, features full-frontal male
and female nudity with explicit scenes of oral sex. Another Bengali film Cosmic Sex shows the actress, Rii Sen
completely nude. Many Indian actresses have appeared nude, right from Simi Grewal in 70's to Anu Agarwal in 90's to Radhika Apte in 2016! Taking a cue, male actors are following close, upcoming Indian Superstar, Ranveer Singh, unsettled many with his bare butt act in Aditya Chopra's latest hit Befikre (2016)
